I have been reading a book called Managing with Aloha and it ties Hawaiian cultural values into successful business. One of the great passages I just read was on the value of ‘Imi ola: To seek life at its very best.
“‘Imi ola is to seek life. As a value it teaches us that our purpose in life is to seek its highest form for us. You have choices, and you are able to make the best choice for your own life. ‘Imi ola is the value that places the ability to achieve your purpose in your own hands, giving you the clear understanding that you have the power to create your own destiny. The value of ‘Imi ola seeks life at its very best.” – Rosa Say
I thought this passage was ironically a great one as we are going into 2012. ‘Imi ola is a value that we should all be striving to live by. Let’s break down this passage.
1. “… teaches us that our purpose in life is to seek its highest form for us.” One needs to understand that every human being is completely different. We all have different ideas, passions and strengths and that it takes us reflecting on our inner self to know what we should be living for. Don’t live your life striving towards achieving something that is a reflection on the others around you. You define what your highest self is and that is what will give you purpose.
2. “‘Imi ‘ola is the value that places the ability to achieve your purpose in your own hands…” Because of this individuality, nobody can truly tell you what you should be doing with your life. Nobody will truly be able to understand who you are and what are the best actions for you. This idea give immense power to yourself. You are the one that knows best what is right for you and with passion and desire, you are the only one that will make your life filled with purpose.
Understanding this core value of ‘imo ola, I encourage you all to reflect on yourself in 2011 and see how you can create new goals and missions to dedicate 2012 to ‘imo ola. With this new year, it is only a reminder that life continues to grow with or without us. Whether it is your work, your relationships, or your health, you owe it to yourself to live this life to its fullest.
Happy New Year and I can’t wait to see what is in store for all of you in 2012! Cheers!
